How many times do you find yourself falling into the trap of overextending yourself? Between managing listings, dealing with clients, and staying on top of market trends, the pressure to be perfect can be overwhelming. We can’t always be perfect (I know, this can be a hard pill to swallow). Striving for perfection can often lead to burnout and diminished productivity. Let’s dive into why embracing imperfection and setting realistic goals is crucial for your success.

The Pitfalls of Perfectionism

Perfectionism, despite its appealing name, can hinder your ability to get things done. Research has shown that perfectionists often set unattainable goals, leading to frustration and a sense of failure when they fall short *insert sad face*. This mindset can prevent you from appreciating your accomplishments, even when you’ve done an excellent job and we KNOW you’re doing your best!

Brian Swider, an associate professor at the University of Florida, points out that perfectionists often don’t find joy in their work. This constant pursuit of an unreachable ideal can also lead to burnout, a state of emotional and physical exhaustion that can leave you feeling numb and unproductive.

The Risk of Burnout

Perfectionists are usually highly reliable and conscientious workers, but they are also at a higher risk of burnout. Gordon Parker, a psychiatrist and researcher, explains that the unrealistic standards perfectionists set for themselves are impossible to meet consistently. This constant pressure can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. Which we’ve all been there in one situation or another sooooo let’s avoid that at all costs. 

Imperfection Does Not Equal Poor Quality

It’s important to remember that imperfection doesn’t mean poor quality. While you’re polishing a project to perfection, your colleagues or clients might be waiting, frustrated, for the finished product. Learning to recognize when a task is good enough can save you time and resources. Looking at it from a different perspective, let’s take a lesson from our beloved show “Bluey.” In one episode, Bluey is determined to create the “PERFECT” picture for her dad. She becomes increasingly frustrated when her drawings don’t turn out exactly as she imagined and spends so much time trying to get them to be. Her dad, seeing her distress, gently reminds her that he loves her drawings not because they are perfect, but because she made them. This heartwarming moment teaches us that what truly matters is the effort and heart we put into our work, not its flawless execution.

Setting Priorities

Prioritizing important tasks over less important ones is key to productivity. Perfectionists often struggle with this, making long lists of priorities and getting bogged down in details. Instead, try to focus on what truly matters and delegate or let go of less critical tasks.

Alice Boyes, a former clinical psychologist, offers three tips to prevent perfectionism from hindering productivity:

  2. Stay flexible: Don’t let rituals or habits force you to waste time on unimportant tasks.
  3. Accept that not every outcome needs to be perfect: It’s okay if some results are just adequate.
